Brief History of Waterbury, Connecticut
Colonial settlers bought lands from several Native American tribes in the 17th century. The area was originally named Mattatuck but was renamed Waterbury because of the many streams and rivers in the area. The population grew slowly in the first century, but Waterbury became an industrial center known for its brass manufacturing in the early 1800s.
