Redding, Connecticut is a small town located in Fairfield County near New York City. It was first recognized as a parish called Reading in 1729. The spelling of the name was changed to Redding shortly after it was incorporated in 1767.
Dozens of local residents volunteered to fight in the Revolutionary War. A steam engine railroad line, the Danbury and Norwalk Railroad, began operating with service to stations in Redding in 1852. Mining for minerals became a profitable industry in the 19th century. Several famous people have lived in Redding over the years because of its proximity to New York City.
