A part of the town of Cortlandt, the village of Buchanan is perhaps best known as the home of the Indian Point nuclear power plant, which sits on the bank of the Hudson River in Buchanan. Originally settled by Kitchawonke Indians prior to the arrival of European settlers, the village was officially designated Buchanan on June 19, 1928. It was named for its first postmaster, George Buchanan.
