The town of Branford, Connecticut is located along Long Island Sound in New Haven County. Early settlers from New Haven bought land that would become Branford from the Mattabesech tribe in 1638. The Dutch created a trading post at the mouth of the Branford River in the 1600s.
The town was originally named Brentford after a town in England with the same name, but it was later shortened to Branford. The town was officially established in 1644 and grew throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. A railroad brought new businesses to the region in the 1850s. During that period, Branford also became a popular resort destination. Today, it is a suburb of New Haven with a population of about 28,000.
