Home Safety Tips for Connecticut Residents: Deadbolts & Deterrents

home safety tipsA break-in can occur anywhere and at any time, even if you think you live in a “good” neighborhood and there has never been a burglary before. You should take some precautions to keep your home, family, and valuables safe. Here are some tips.

Install Secure Locks and Make Sure Only Your Family Has Keys

All the exterior doors in your home should have deadbolt locks. This is an extra layer of security that can make breaking in much more difficult. Deadbolts cost more than other types of locks, but the added security is worth the financial investment.

After you move into a new house, one of the first things you should do is have the locks changed. The previous homeowners and their family and friends could still have keys. Changing the locks will let you make sure that only your family and other people you want to have keys can get in. You should also have the locks changed immediately if you lose your keys.

Hide a Spare Key in a Safe Place

You should leave a spare key somewhere near your home so you can get in if you accidentally lock yourself out, but make sure it is well hidden. Leaving it in a place where it is easy to find, such as under a doormat, can allow a burglar to walk right into your home.

Other Ways to Keep Burglars out

If the exterior doors on your house have the hinges on the outside, a burglar can remove a hinge pin to break in. Put the hinges on the inside to prevent this.

If you have a sliding door, have it reinforced with a metal bar along the bottom track. This will stop a burglar from forcing it open.

Keep your windows locked at night and whenever you are not home. Windows with many small panes of glass are harder to break into than ones with one large glass pane.

Ways to Deter Burglars

An alarm system is one of the best ways to protect your home. This can be an effective deterrent that can make a burglar decide not to try to break into your home. Make sure the wires are hidden so they cannot be cut.

If you go away, make it look like your home is occupied. Set a timer to turn the lights on and off and have your mail held at the post office so burglars will not know that you are away.

Keeping your house well-lit at night can deter thieves. Turn on lights outside your doors and set up motion-activated lights around your house so you will know if someone is in your yard.
